On The Blog

In my garden, I like to mimic what's already happening in the natural world around my home. That means lots of river rock, shade-loving woodland plants, and bright splashes of purple and yellow in Spring. From dandelions and violets popping up throughout the yard to the daffodils still blooming and tulips I've patiently waited for, this month was just a beautiful sight.

One of the things I quickly decided when moving into this space was that I didn't want to fight nature. And I'm so happy with the results so far. I can't know what was planted in this yard by humans, animals, or wind but I have so many wonderful things to enjoy. Wild strawberries provide a sprawling groundcover in my beds. Ajuga blooms create a hazy mist of purple throughout the yard.

The addition of these purple Darwin tulips this past Fall is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, I can only plant them in areas the deer don't visit. Tulips, I found out the hard way last year, are a delicious snack!

And of course, just as the tulips are starting to fade away, the hostas and ferns are coming back full-force. The vegetable garden is getting ready to be planted. And ephemeral beauties like these bleeding hearts are giving me plenty to behold.

Spring really showed up this month! A few days before March 1st, these tiny crocus blooms appeared. This yellow variety is new in my garden this year, although I have several old and new purple blooms as well.

My daffodils have been in bloom for several weeks now, too. In between some of my daffs are another new-to-me bulb, Siberian squill, which are a petite blue bloom. I love the way these look in mass plantings, so I hope mine naturalize and multiply over the years!

I currently have a few varieties of flower seeds started in jugs, via the Winter sowing method: evening primrose, purple coneflower, daisies, foxglove, and lavender. This is my first time trying the method but I'm hopeful it works well for me!

I hope your garden, however big or small, old or new, is looking beautiful and bringing you joy!
